Ashbury hand-made clay roof tiles - production

ASHBURY tiles are produced at our factory in the heart of the brick and tile producing region of Turkey continuing a tradition going back thousands of years.

Entirely hand-made, the manufacturing process follows these basic steps:

1. Enough raw clay for our annual production is taken from our own quarry during late spring and left to rest for a period of 12 months.

2. The now dry clay is then crushed, washed and passed through a series of filters to remove any impurities, thus ensuring a high quality clay for our hand moulders.

3. The washed clay is poured into drying tanks where excess water is filtered out to reduce the moisture content so the clay can be properly worked at the correct consistency. During this time, the clay is marked out into blocks so it may be turned during drying and then convenient sized blocks can be moved to the factory for working.

4. The moulders hand throw the clay blocks into sanded moulds to form the tiles, which are then passed into the drying rooms where the moisture content is reduced in readiness for firing.

5. The dried tiles are then stacked into the Hoffman kilns where they are fired at temperatures in excess of 1050 degrees centigrade.

6. The fired tiles then pass through quality control before being packed into wooden crates. (ASHBURY tiles are blended within the crates at the factory). They are then labelled and shrink wrapped ready for dispatch.
